This position is located in the Fuels Department, Operations Division, located at any NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center. This organization directs several simultaneous operations within a complex bulk fuel distribution system to receive, store, transfer, and dispense aviation/ground petroleum and lube oil products. The Physical Science Technician conducts a wide variety of chemical and physical tests, and assists the Quality Assurance Specialist, Chemist and Supervisory Chemist with more complex efforts.
Position Duties/Responsibilities
Performs chemical and physical testing on samples received at the laboratory according to all requirements and guidelines provided by standard operating procedures, ASTM standards and Department of Defense (DoD) specifications. Determines whether products meet prescribed military specifications or environmental regulations. Inspects and samples a variety of tanks, tank trucks, single product tankers, pipelines, barges and other media associated with the storage and transportation of petroleum products while assisting the Quality Assurance Specialist, Chemist or the Supervisory Chemist with the testing of various petroleum products. Analyzes test results and performs routine calculations. Insures that fuel impurity levels are within safety limitations. Maintains records of fuel tests, independently interprets test results and notifies affected ship and/or activity and supervisors of any questionable findings. Calibrates and performs limited maintenance/repair on laboratory test equipment. Provides quality control and inspection services for all products received, stored, issued, or transferred at the Area of Responsibility (AOR). Maintains records of all tests performed, both written and electronic. Inspects information from samples as received for correctness and completion; request additional information from the customer as needed. Transcribes the sample information from the sample tag or sheet into the sample log, onto bench sheets (logbooks) and into the LIMS (laboratory information management system). Enters result data into the the LIMS. Generates and completes all routine reports from data entered. Reviews completed reports for correctness and accuracy. Refers more complex technical judgements to the Quality Assurance Specialist, Chemist or the Supervisory Chemist. Advises supervisors of possible problems, unusual test results and unusual reports.
Assists with the general upkeep of the AOR Fuel Laboratory. Prepares samples for testing. Keeps designated laboratory work areas stocked with an adequate supply of reagents and solvents. Performs preventive maintenance and assists supervisor with corrective maintenance on laboratory equipment. Learns to calibrate laboratory equipment according to governing directives and assists in the installation, maintenance; and repair of equipment. Records and documents new samples in accordance with established divisional procedures.
